Lorenzo Doss named All American

#Tulane President Scott Cowen, where has this version of you been my entire life!

Things I would like to point out in this interview.

Advocate: Tulane is joining the American Athletic Conference next year. How do you think that will work out?
Cowen: It’s going to be a very strong conference in football. It will be extraordinarily strong in basketball and very good in all of the other sports. For Tulane, it was a nice step forward. Also, we continue to compete against SMU and Memphis and Houston, schools we had been with before. But it also makes us a little more East Coast-centric with Connecticut and Temple, which is where so many of our students come from. We’re also more academically akin to them. And I think success will continue to make us an attractive school for perhaps other conferences.

Advocate: With the new system, unless a team from the American finishes in the top four in the nation, it will have no chance to play for the national championship. There is a guaranteed spot in another BCS-level bowl for the best team from the group of five, though. Is that a fair trade-off?
Cowen: It’s going to be tough to make the playoff. But that will encourage all of us to upgrade our nonconference scheduling and to be part of the strongest conference you can be in. At least we do have the guaranteed spot, and that’s going to be exciting.
Advocate: Is it going to be a question your successor will have to ask anytime soon?
Cowen: I don’t think so. We’re in pretty good shape. For the first time in decades, we basically have all new or renovated facilities: the football stadium, the basketball/volleyball practice facility, Devlin Fieldhouse. Secondly, I think we’ve turned the corner in football, and I think we’ll continue to be successful. What I mean by that is competing every year for a conference title and going to bowl games. I think we’re headed in the right direction in basketball, although it was very unfortunate with all of the transfers. But (coach Ed Conroy) has brought in a lot of talented young guys who will go through a learning curve. So I feel that athletics is in pretty good shape and, with the new conference, that just adds to all of it.
Advocate: It’s often been said that, to compete in football, Tulane needs to make some academic accommodations for athletes, both in admissions and in available majors. Has that been done?
Cowen: People have already misunderstood the standards. We’ve always had the flexibility to admit the student-athletes that we felt could be successful. We have some majors options for them we didn’t have before, especially in the School of Continuing Studies. But most are still taking the standard majors. I’m very proud of how our athletes are doing academically

Big 12? "Tulane has the best chance out of anyone to realize its Tremendous Upside Potential and moving up to the top"

Click the link above for a very interesting & detailed (long) read about future Big 12 expansion and how each of the candidates are broken down and ranked.

TULANE Football Brand Value – 15
National TV Value – 5
Local TV Value – 3
Demographics/Recruiting Value – 15
Academics – 5
Basketball Value – 0
Geographic Fit/Need – 5
Tremendous Upside Potential/Monopoly Power – 10
Total: 58
Overview:
Tulane has been in the on-the-field football doldrums since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, but the Green Wave might be resuscitating itself at just the right time. The school is building a brand new right-sized on-campus stadium and the football team is bowl eligible this season. Tulane’s academics are arguably the best of any school in the Group of Five besides Rice and the state of Louisiana is one of the best pound-for-pound football recruiting areas in the country. Honestly, out of all of the schools on this list, Tulane has the best chance out of anyone to realize its Tremendous Upside Potential and moving up to the top.

Tulsa put up an average of 43 points per game vs Tulane in the last 8 years. Yesterday they needed 4 plays to go 5 yards for their only TD coming after an interception return set them up for the score.

Scott Cowen talks Tulane Football

October 18, 2013
Good Morning:   Tulane has been a bit star-struck lately with actors Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum filming scenes from "22 Jump Street" on campus, "The Queen Latifah Show" taping from the steps of Gibson Hall and the History Channel filming in one of our earth and environmental sciences labs.   Major motion pictures shooting on campus are not only for fun. They assist Louisiana's growing film industry, an important part of our city and state's economy. They also benefit Tulane by raising our profile and creating a positive buzz and excitement about the university. "The Queen Latifah Show" taping, for instance, featured both Tulane students and a special group of alumnae. Tulane students have also been hired as extras and have earned a few speaking roles in the many films we have hosted throughout the years. Margie and I even got to do a cameo appearance in "22 Jump Street." And that photo of Channing Tatum in a football uniform riding through campus with Jonah Hill has been tweeted and retweeted more times than I can count.   This is all great, but the football players who really deserve tweeting are our own Green Wave, who USA Today just named the nation's top "surprise team." This team is fun to watch and last week's triple overtime victory was one of the most exciting and nail-biting sporting events I have ever witnessed at Tulane. To make sure you are part of this year's fun, we are offering every faculty and staff member two free tickets to the Green Wave's next game against Tulsa at 2:30 p.m., Oct. 26, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. You and the team will get to see my hair a lovely shade of (TBD) for this game.  I also definitely plan to visit with students in the tailgating section before the game. Athletics is planning a huge pre-game party for our students with free food, soft drinks and music. It is sort of a Homecoming Part II to make up for some of the special events that got rained out for this year's Homecoming. I know it will be a blast. Our students pour their hearts into everything they do -- in the classroom, on the field, in the stands and in the community they are the real superstars who make the real difference.  Have a great weekend,

Tulane Football now 5-2. National media, Local media & Celebs talk Tulane!

6:00pm update, 10/16

"Each week, Football Outsiders recognizes the most outstanding college linemen, defenders and other darkhorses from the previous weekend who are habitually overlooked in the hype for that other award (whatever it's called). These are the Lowsmen.
DERRICK STROZIER • CB, Tulane Last week, Strozier returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown against North Texas, a critical play in a narrow, 24-21 win. On Saturday, he struck again on a 99-yard interception return for the Green Wave's only touchdown in regulation, a critical play in an eventual 36–33 upset of East Carolina in triple overtime. (Brace yourself: The win improved Tulane–Tulane, which is Tulane–to 5-2 for the season.) Strozier also added eight tackles (one for loss) and a pair of passes broken up, helping keep ECU out of the end zone until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter."

"There are also signs of life at Tulane, where second-year coach Curtis Johnson has the Green Wave (4-2, 2-0 C-USA) off to their best start since an undefeated 1998 season. Stewart Mandel"

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/10/07/monday-tailgate-football-four-surprising-winning-teams/2934063/

"Tulane (4-2, 2-0): A program that hasn't reached the postseason since 2002 is just two wins away from bowl eligibility. For that matter, Tulane hasn't won five games since 2004. Starting the conference schedule with wins against Louisiana Tech and North Texas makes them a frontrunner in Conference USA West, but the Green Wave is going to need more consistent play from quarterback Nick Montana. The transfer from Washington (and yes, Joe Montana's son) has thrown 10 touchdowns to four interceptions, but at 55.7%, hasn't been particularly accurate. Receiver Ryan Grant is 12th in the country with 40 receptions, and nobody else on the team has more than 17. Saturday's game against East Carolina is a tough one, but four more wins isn't a stretch."

We are #1!!!!!
http://footballscoop.com/news/11111-the-top-ten-coaching-jobs-that-no-one-saw-coming
But look who is #6

1. Tulane - Check the Conference USA standings this morning and sitting atop the West Division are Curtis Johnson and the Tulane Green Wave. Johnson's team has already matched its win total from the 2011 and 2012 seasons combined at 4-2, and they're only three points away from being 5-1. The 4-2 mark and 2-0 begin to conference play is Tulane's best start since its undefeated season in 1998.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Week Awards - Week 6

http://footballscoop.com/news/11094-week-6-coaching-awards

"Special Teams Unit of the Week - Tulane The 4-2 start by Curtis Johnson's Tulane team has been one of the best unsung stories of the season. If the Green Wave manages to make its first bowl appearance since the 1998 Liberty Bowl, they'll look back at this 24-21 win over North Texas as the day the dream became a reality. With the score tied 7-7 in the third quarter, Tulane blocked a Zach Paul field goal try and Derrick Strozier strolled 62 yards to pay dirt. Tulane then took a 21-7 on the ensuing North Texas possession after Lorenzo Doss took an interception 59 yards back to the house. North Texas tied the game with two fourth quarter scores, but Cairo Santos won it with a 27-yard field goal as time expired.  With the win, Tulane has not only met its win total from the past two seasons combined, but they also find themselves tied for first place in Conference USA's West Division."

White-Out Campus on Homecoming Weekend for Devon Walker

"Tulane Athletics, SAAC Look to White-Out Campus on Homecoming Weekend for Devon Walker

Tulane student-athletes and members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) continue to celebrate Devon Walker's return to school this semester. In an effort to raise awareness for Devon and his cause, each of the Green Wave’s student-athletes, along with TU’s SAAC group, are asking the campus and all Tulane students, staff and faculty to show support by sporting Devon Walker gear on Friday, Oct. 4 and during the homecoming game against North Texas on Saturday, Oct. 5.  The goal is to make a grass roots level movement by selling Devon Walker T-shirts, new bumper stickers, bracelets, etc. on the quad during the week prior to the Homecoming weekend. Tulane student-athletes will be posting this information on Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites and are asking others to pass along this information.  A table will be set up on the quad with Devon Walker items, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Friday, Oct. 4. Items available for purchase include t-shirts, bumper stickers and bracelets. The items will also be sold at the Superdome during the homecoming game."

Tulane Presidential Search Update

Below you will find information on the search for a new President and links to different areas. I wanted to point something out that a friend brought to my attention because I admit I didn't begin to read it yet. I wanted to put this at the top before you became tired of reading because the position description is about 26 pages and in it you will find this

Enhance the University Experience
Tulane is dedicated to providing an outstanding educational experience for its students. In order to constantly improve student retention and graduation rates in the coming decade, it will be incumbent on the new President to ensure that the university optimize the value-proposition of the educational programs, insure affordability and accessibility to foster a diverse student population, and explore ways to secure and enhance the University’s brand and position as a leading private research university. Capitalizing on new athletic facilities and conference affiliation will also help to enhance the campus and alumni experience and give the new president the opportunity to enhance athletics, consistent with the university’s mission and commitment to being a leader in education, research and service.

September 16, 2013
It is with great pleasure that we write today to provide you with an update on our Presidential Search. As you know, a Search Committee was appointed by the Board of Administrators in mid-June following the announcement by President Cowen of his retirement effective July 1, 2014.
The Search Committee was busy earlier this summer interviewing and subsequently hiring a search consultant. We announced in early July that the Committee had selected the firm of Russell Reynolds Associates, one of the world’s leading executive recruiting firms, as its search consultant. We are fortunate that Ilene Nagel, the head of the firm’s higher education practice, is leading the search for Russell Reynolds.
The Search Committee, with significant input from the Board of Administrators, administrators and other constituents, completed the Position Description that is posted on the Presidential Search website at http://tulane.edu/presidentialsearch/upload/Tulane-Profile-New-Draft-9-13_13.pdf
The search is very much on schedule. As a result of our efforts to recruit a national pool of outstanding leaders, we now have a significant number of individuals who have agreed to discuss this exciting opportunity with us in strict confidence. We expect the pool to continue to grow as the search proceeds. The candidate pool currently includes individuals nominated by members of the Tulane community, those recruited by our search consultant and those who have responded to our position advertising. This distinguished group features a diverse set of backgrounds and academic disciplines. It is also populated by men, women and minority candidates, the vast majority of whom are presently in leadership positions in AAU research universities and other distinguished colleges and universities. We encourage you to continue to submit nominations until the process is concluded. You may do so at http://tulane.edu/presidentialsearch/feedback.cfm
We are delighted with the input our Committee has received from faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of Tulane. In order to further inform our process, we will be hosting three town hall meetings to solicit additional input. The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and is intended for uptown campus faculty and staff. The meeting will be held in the Qatar Ballroom in the Lavin-Bernick Center.  On Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. we will host a town hall meeting for downtown faculty and staff in the Tidewater Auditorium. Finally, on Oct. 15 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. we will host a town hall meeting for students in the Kendall Cram Room in the Lavin-Bernick Center. You may view the schedule of town hall meetings at http://tulane.edu/presidentialsearch/town-hall-meetings.cfm. We encourage you to attend these meetings with members of the Search Committee.
We anticipate we will begin to interview candidates within the next 60 days, with a goal of selecting our finalists by the end of the year. Rest assured, the Committee will perform significant reference checking on the finalists and will spend considerable time with each candidate before making its recommendation to the Board of Administrators. We believe we will be in a position to announce a new President early in 2014.
We are pleased with the progress we have made and with the quality of the candidate pool, which is a testament to the outstanding reputation of Tulane. That said, we are still in the early stages of this search, and a number of candidates are in multiple searches, so we and our search consultant will continue our efforts to recruit and attract outstanding candidates and work diligently to make Tulane their number one choice.  We will be providing additional updates as appropriate, which will be posted on the Presidential Search website. As ever, please feel free to make your thoughts and comments known to the Search Committee via the feedback function on the Search website.
Rick Rees and Andy Wisdom Co-chairs, Presidential Search Committee

A summary of Curtis Johnson at the Tulane team meeting this morning

Was told about this

"Enjoy this until about 12:00pm today (when film/meetings about the game are over) and then we move on to Syracuse. This was a nice win on the road but we have to get better. We need to get the next one. It's not time to celebrate or party. We have not reached our goals yet. I promise you I will throw you a big party after we win the bowl game"
He stressed that this win does not make us a team that is no longer desperate. We are not desperate for a win. We are a program that needs wins. Our desperation this year ends (momentarily) when we have reached our goals of winning this thing. The overall tone was that CJ was proud of his guys but made sure they realized that the job is not done and that everyone (including the staff) needs to work to get better every day. The best teams want to be great, want to dominate all the time and that is what we need to be aiming for.

Tulane Lands great pickup with #16, WR Niguel Veal-Falkins

"The younger brother of Alabama commit Raheem Falkins, Niguel is a tremendous athlete that could play on either side of the ball at the next level. His best fit might be at cornerback or slot receiver. Currently holds offers from Ole Miss, Western Kentucky and SMU."

"Niguel Falkins, ATH, West Jefferson, 5-10, 170 There may not be a better player in the state that gets less fanfare than Falkins. He's a dynamic, versatile football player that could play on either side of the ball at a high level in college. Look for him to have a big year for West Jefferson and don't be surprised if he has one of the most productive collegiate careers of all the prospects in this class. "

Official commitment
http://sportsnola.com/sports/tulane/599703-recruiting-niguel-veal-falkins-commits-to-tulane.html

"I think he brings big play ability to Tulane," Scott said. "He is the kind of guy Curtis Johnson is looking for, the kind of player from this area, who can make plays and make grades. I've never seen him make less than a "B" on his transcripts. He has a 20 on his ACT. He can catch and he can run and he can make you miss. When you combine speed, elusiveness and good hands, you have a pretty good combination." Scott is happy that Veal-Falkins is staying home. "Niguel's recruitment has been interesting," Scott said. "We have Parry Nickerson already at Tulane. Their staff did a wonderful job of recruiting him. We want our kids at Tulane. We like to go to the games and see our kids play here. Veal-Falkins is the 16th commitment for Tulane.

West Jeff Head Coach
"Let me say this," he explained. "He's rated 25th in the state and there's no way there are 25 better players in what's a loaded Louisiana (2014) class.  "He doesn't have one C on his transcript. He has a 20 on the ACT, and is as humble a kid as you'll meet."
