Tulane University Yulman Stadium updates
I used to check the Gould Evens website (architects of the stadium) every day for over a year. The website was always offline as it was being reconstructed. Well finally someone pointed out that it is back up and running and there a couple new images of the stadium on there.
Here is the local Fox News update from June 18
Check it out here: http://www.gouldevans.com/synopsis.php?id=TFS
Also some nice images of the new Hertz Center : http://www.gouldevans.com/synopsis.php?id=THC

Summer time...
For better or worse, I just wanted to bump this. In my opinion it is inevitable each off season that changes to the roster happen. I still expect some additions although maybe not all of the ones that we may be expecting and possibly a couple subtractions (be it permanent or temporary).

Tulane Football camp June 14-15
Here is a little info about the Friday & Saturday Tulane camps. Just some quick hits on a couple things and I will try and get some more names if I can of some kids that caught some attention that I might not have a name on yet. In case you missed the blog post on the Thursday session, you can view it by clicking HERE
Friday was a huge day as Coach Curtis Johnson handed out several offers on the field. Tulane offered and received a commitment from 2014 Donaldsonville WR/ATH Leondre James. James showed great quickness, speed and ball skills. James was a WR for Tulane player Devon Breaux who was in attendance to encourage his former teammate. Tulane also offered a pair of 2015 player. The first was for CB/S Deshawn Raymond who is now up to about 4 offers. Deshawn has an older brother that is RS FR, 4 star CB in Corn Dog Country. Deshawn is easily a legit 6-1 but his big asset are his long arms - he just looks like he is covering twice as much ground as the other corners out there because even if his a little out of position his arms give a little bit more coverage area to get his hands on the ball or wideout. There was another 2015 offer that went out but I am trying to locate the young mans information. I know he was offered because I was standing there when it happened. UPDATE The offer went to 2015 Hahnville S/LB Dwaine Thomas. This profile says he is 6-2/190 but he looked much bigger than 190. He will be a big safety but more than likely he will be a college LB.
It also appears that we offered another 2016 kid to along with RB Tre Turner in St. Aug TE Jamal Pettigrew. Turner by the way apparently attended the Ole Miss or Miss St camp the day after the Tulane camp and received an offer there after a blazing 4.38 40.

Here is a list of players that had nice showings at the camp. They displayed above average athleticism, speed, agility & skills. I am not sure what level of offers these guys will receive if any but I would say at the very least these are guys that showed enough potential to earn a college football scholarship somewhere in the future.
*** 2014 CB Terrence Alexander from John Curtis, LA - Incredible competitor
*** 2014 CB Donovan Wilson from Woodlawn, LA - long, rangey, good length
*** 2014 WR/CB Mandell Sam from Opelousas, LA - bit of a hamstring pull, looked solid, student of the game
2014 WR Mitch Burmfield from Covington, LA - easily the most complete WR out there on Saturday
2014 ATH Russell Gage from Redemptorist, LA - visited campus last week
2014 OLB Eric Bowie from Ouachita, LA - very solid speed and range, great frame to add weight
2014 DE Herlandez Corley from Mobile, AL
2014 OG Justin Moore from Helen Cox, LA - he is not the 6-2 listed & not sure what level he will get a chance at but the kid is strong!
2014 LB Chance Barney from Covington, LA
2014 DL Jarrell Jackson from Higgins, LA
2014 CB Larry Boyd from Hahnville, LA - The guy is small at about 5-9, 165 but has great skills as a cover corner. His size might hold others back from offering a DI scholarship but his size is not holding him back from the truth - dude can play some ball.
2014 CB/ATH Leslie Collins from Kentwood, LA - 4.44 40
2014 LB Nick Holman from Bob Jones, AL
2015 CB Shawn Butler from St. Pauls, LA
2015 WR Terren Encalade from Belle Chasse, LA
2015 WR/RB Kirk Merritt from Newman, LA
2015 DT Sean Benson from Hahnville, LA
2016 TE Jamal Pettigrew from St. Aug, LA - Tulane offered
There is also a secret stud out there that I will not mention by name. He is raw and I mean raw. Certain coaches on staff just say, "when this kid gets coached up, watch out!"
Last year as a young buck he came to camp at Tulane and slipped and still ran a high 4.3. You think that is a lie? Well this year he ran a 4.25 40! Still has more HS to go.

I am working on some more names on kids. Not sure if they will be DI (FBS or FCS) kids or not but kids that definitely showed some skills and more than anything showed the work ethic you want from a kid. I would like to get their names so they can be recognized.

New helmet and uniform options?
New Tulane commit TE Kendall Ardoin seen pictured here along with some other options that were leaked out months ago!
Tulane lands their #1 TE! #5 in for the Green Wave
I was informed about an hour ago that the tree was shaking and out fell a huge pick-up for the 2014 class in TE Kendall Ardoin. Great pick-up for this staff and someone we will have to fight to keep for sure. He should excel in this offense that Curtis Johnson is running.

Breaking news, Tulane lands #4, 3 star ATH/WR Leondre James, Donaldsonville, LA
I will have a substantial update late tomorrow. Tonights camp is over but tomorrows begin bright and early. I was there when we offered and received a commitment from Donaldsonville 2014 WR Leondre James.
Here is a little something on him from the Times Pic who has surprisingly had two days of coverage of the camp. I might have to drop the "Tiger" from Mr. Smiths name :) - Smile Jimmy!

Tulane Football Camp June 13, 2013
Just going to start posting things as they come to me. This is the first of what should a couple pieces on the 3 days of football camps for Tulane Football.
Just to be clear, I am still tracking down exactly who was there so this is not 100% complete and accurate but it is pretty damn close. There were a lot of kids so I am trying to track down names of the guys that stood out. There a few kids I still need to identify.
I guess the biggest news from yesterday was the fact that the #1 recruit in the entire country was in attendance as a participant last night - Mr. Leonard Fournette - RB from St. Aug HS. How a kid can be so big, so fast, so quick, so agile at the RB position is beyond me. The young man is just an incredible physical specimen. I would call him a star of the camp but you expect what you saw from a player of his caliber. The one thing I was more impressed with about Leonard was that he took it upon himself to mentor the other guys out there. It was clear they all knew who he was and that they were in awe of him and he led the way in drills, showed them how to work hard and even help teach different things. He also took it upon himself to leave the RB group and then go take some snaps at WR. Dude can do it all.
Another surprise participant that showed good feet, power and explosiveness was a University of Texas commit - St. Aug DT Courtney Garnett.
Tulane put out an official offer to 2016 Holy Cross RB Tre Turner who blazed a 4.46 40 time in the brutal humidity.Turner is camping with Mississippi State next.
The biggest stars of day one in my opinion were Tulane QB commit Glen Cuiellette & up and coming sophomore Riverside QB Deuce Wallace (nephew of Timmy Byrd). Glen was remarkable. He is very athletic, has a great frame and he can _____ing spin the rock! He puts more zip on the ball than any QB I have seen on a Tulane roster since Patrick Ramsey I think. He showed great power and solid accuracy. The WRs trying to catch his ball were saying "damn, never had a ball thrown to me like that before" and even the Tulane staff that should be very familiar with Glen were doing triple takes at what they were seeing. The most impressive thing I noticed about Glen ( & Tanner Lee at last years camp to be honest) is the leadership. You could instantly tell they were had the ability to lead by the way they worked and by already instructing others at the camp. Don't know if the young man will be a great QB for us or not but I cannot think of another QB I have been more impressed with than Cuiellette. That said, keep in mind that other than a couple youtube clips and this one day in person I have nothing else to go on but the 1st impression was a big one. Glen camped with Mississippi State recently where the coaches there told him he was the best QB at the camp.
Now, having said all that the most impressive player at the camp by a long shot had to be QB Deuce Wallace. As a freshman last year he threw for 2700 yards and 31 TDs. This kid looked freaking fantastic and is still so young. From the footwork, accuracy and arm strength (not like Cuiellette's) this young man seemed to have it all. Again, he showed that intangible you look for and that is leadership. You can tell a leader by the way a QB carries himself and how the players around him react to him and this guy carries himself like a senior getting ready for college, not a guy that just finished 9th grade.
As always there were a host of St. Aug kids there along with Texas commit Courtney Garnett. Tulane commit DE Peter Woullard was there and he looked better than I thought he would look. He has a nice frame on him and has a bit more build than I thought he would have. I think we have a solid get right there. Also in attendance were 2014's OL Peyton Winbush , LB Austin Craig , DT Marseth Andry & DB/S Brandon Williams , 2015 RB Lenard Fournette and many more I am tracking down.
There was a nice contingent of kids from the Tampa, FL area there. Shaw HS had two guys off the top of my head that I noticed. 2015's LB Joe Prevost and WR Bryson Simmons. There were a couple more QBs out there that were solid but I need to get names on. I think one of them was from Ohio or the east coast but I am checking.
Lastly we had about six kickers out there:
Nick Vogel - Mandarin HS, FL
Aaron Bird - Westgate HS, LA & http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=6704325
Shelton Wooley - Ruston HS, LA
Zach Standish - Sam Barlow HS, OR
Dalton Young - Christian Brothers HS, TN
Logan Klotz - LA
That is it for now. Check back later and this weekend for more updates.

Update on potential addition to the team
There is an update on potential addition to the team by Mike Coppage (who broke the story) at http://tulane.scout.com/ about the potential significant addition to the team, 2013 TE Deondre Skinner
The Tulane Men's Tennis program has recruited the No. 9 mid-major recruiting class in the country
Something a little different from the football talk but this is that other 2% that will be non-Tulane Football related.

1. Joshua E Parrott @JoshuaParrott25m Matt Derenbecker leaving Dayton to play closer to home per @jeffborzello. Played 1 yr at LSU. 4-star F from Metairie (LA) Park Country Day.
2. Jeff Shelton @TheJeffShelton23m @JoshuaParrott Ragin Cajuns on his map or more like Tulane?

More news on academics for the doubters
I talked about the new majors coming here
http://tulanefootballtalk.blogspot.com/2013/06/more-game-changing-news.html
And then I read this today from Rick Dickson in an article in the Baton Rouge Advocate
I have heard there will be around five new options available for all of the student body that some people would title "athlete-friendly" although I never understood why learning to become a teacher, work with sports injuries, work for the government, working with computers, working in the media or digital design would be considered "athlete friendly" - guess we don't need any of those types of people in society..........

And then I read this today from Rick Dickson in an article in the Baton Rouge Advocate
"At least they are getting more academic support once they arrive. Tulane is adding majors that are more athlete-friendly this summer; Dickson cited physical therapy, exercise nutrition and homeland security as examples."

10 years after the 2003 Tulane University review of Tulane Athletics
I will not make a new post each time I find something on but here are the first two. I would like to give my opinion on who wrote these and what has been written here but considering this is a public blog I will remember what my parents told me long ago, "if you don't have anything nice to say, it is best not to say anything at all" and I will exercise that in this situation. I am not saying I totally disagree and the facts in the wins/losses are not debatable and I understand that perception is reality but I also strongly feel that by looking at all the information we have about new facilities, more money, more academic help, catching up with and getting on par with the little things so many others are doing that we are undoubtedly about to radically change that reality. I don't mind these opinion pieces but what I do mind is that they always dwell on things that are not necessarily the same as they were in the past. They have an opinion and want people to share that opinion and completely ignore the clues and information that is current which would lead people to realize that we are operating differently now from what we did to get us where we were.
Regardless if I agree or disagree with some of or all of these opinion pieces written, part of my goal in this blog is to provide information about Tulane Football & Athletics. This will be a mesh of news on the review & other recent articles written regarding Tulane Athletics past and future.
Ted Lewis: Time might be right for another dicussion on Tulane athletics
Guerry Smith: Ten years after review, Tulane’s sports woes linger
Ed Daniels: Rejoice, Tulane fans; Cowen will retire in 2014

Eye opening stuff
I just wanted to point this out for those that just don't get recruiting or just some of the business.
I saw a kid tweet out that he was about to pick his college for football and he named Tulane as one of his final choices. Now, when he picked another school that was not Tulane a Tulane fan got all upset and said our staff was not doing a good job getting beat out by said school.
Funny thing is this, our coaches were not even pursuing this kid anymore. Did not even remember him really.
So, just as a lesson..... don't act foolish about things unless you have the facts.

Roster additions
Just want to remind folks it is not official yet. We may get all 3 or we may get none. Nothing is set in stone regardless of what has been said on the forums.

Well all my news just leaked....
That said, regardless of what has been posted nothing is official until Tulane makes it official.
The potential additions to the team that I have hinted at, if everything checks out all would be eligible for the 2013 season.
DE/LB Tyler Gilbert, John Curtis, Univ of Arkansas transfer
DB Taurean Nixon, Southern Lab in Baton Rouge, Univ of Memphis transfer

QB Ryan Griffin vying for backup role with Saints
Full article: QB Ryan Griffin vying for backup role with Saints
"Tulane coach Curtis Johnson brought the Saints offense with him when he took the Green Wave job last year after six seasons as the receivers coach in New Orleans under Sean Payton. The terminology and many of the plays Griffin is running in mini-camp already are second nature."
“There were seven other teams that offered, but it was a pretty easy decision,” said Griffin, a California native. “I’m so happy I get to stay, hopefully, for a while longer. It’s a great city, and Drew Brees has been great. From on the field to the film room, he’s pointed out little technique things and drop things. I’m trying to absorb every bit of information that I can.”
"Griffin, trying to follow in Daniel’s footsteps, turned a few heads at minicamp, which ended Thursday. “He’s good, he really is,” tight end Jimmy Graham said. “He’s improving every day. The more he practices, the better he’ll be. He definitely has velocity, and to be going through the reads like he does this early is awesome.”
The big football news
The news talked about here http://tulanefootballtalk.blogspot.com/2013/06/huge-football-news-coming.html
can now be found here http://tulane.scout.com/
I still expect there to be a couple more roster additions that I have mentioned several times in previous blog post. I said that the roster for Fall Camp 2013 would look much different than we thought it would look like and from what I have gathered we are still on track for that. No promises but just what I am hearing from very reliable sources.

Subject: A Message from the Board of Tulane
Dear Tulane Community, You recently received correspondence from Scott Cowen, announcing his pending retirement next year from the Tulane Presidency. There will be many occasions in the next year to recognize Scott and Margie, but this is our first public opportunity to thank both for their extraordinary contributions to Tulane University. Scott and Margie have our deepest gratitude and appreciation for 15 years of passionate, principled and courageous leadership at Tulane, and in the New Orleans community. In particular, their incredible leadership post-Katrina allowed for the reinvention of Tulane, as well as a renaissance of their beloved adopted City of New Orleans, and has led to the great potential and optimism we now enjoy as a university and city. Looking ahead, let us offer a few comments. First, we’re confident that Scott will continue to fulfill his duties as president of the university at full speed, with his trademark enthusiasm and effectiveness, up until his last day in the President’s office. Knowing Scott as we all do, there is no question about his ongoing energy, focus, and commitment to meet every challenge, and take advantage of every opportunity to help Tulane achieve its lofty aspirations. Secondly, know that the Board of Administrators is fully committed to identifying outstanding new leadership that will continue our progress and build on the achievements during Scott’s tenure. Consistent with this commitment, the Board is in the process of finalizing a Search Committee, establishing the principles of the process, and developing a timeline that contemplates the announcement of Tulane’s new President by this calendar year end with a start date of July 1, 2014. As we make more progress, we will report additional information regarding the search process to the Tulane community. We thank each of you for your support and dedication to Tulane.
Sincerely, Jay Lapeyre Darryl Berger (Outgoing Board Chair) (Incoming Board Chair)

News on Glen Cuiellette, 2014 QB commit for Tulane
"Glen Cuiellette, QB, 6-0, 205, Mandeville, 2014, Tulane-commitment
http://highschoolsports.nola.com/player/glen-cuiellette/
If there was a quarterback MVP award to be handed out, it likely would have gone to Cuiellette. On Friday nights Cuiellette shows the kind of poise and ability of a big-time prospect. On this weekend at the Elite 25, he showed that he is improving as a quarterback and has the potential to really excel at the position on the next level. Tulane may have found themselves a gem, and they may have to hold off other programs that may come snooping around."
FYI - FWIW
I too constantly check the university academics webpage to see when it will be updated officially however I have been told (again, not fact I guess until updated) that the path to those new majors actually opened up to begin this Summer 2013.

More interesting news on the rumor mill
Edit added here: I too constantly check the university academics webpage to see when it will be updated officially however I have been told (again, not fact I guess until updated) that the path to those new majors actually opened up to begin this Summer 2013.
Some new majors we heard about a couple years ago are rumored to finally be here. They are open to all students . I am pointing this out because this is not like a big fundraiser for a stadium, facilities and influx of hard cash. This type of stuff will never be met with an announcement or press conference.
This news was actually talked about a couple years ago with Tulane Football The Playbook and we were told to be patient because it takes time. Then on December 18, 2012 Tulane Athletic director Rick Dickson said this
http://tulane.edu/administration/president/tulane_talk/tt_031513.cfm
I point this out because I have heard from several well placed sources that the new majors are ready to go and I am 90% sure they are active beginning this Summer 2013. I also believe this to be true because if you are a Tulane Athletics message board follower you know that a person named Big EZ Wave is extremely credible and back on March 23, 2013 he said this
Think what you want, that is your prerogative however I would just say that if you look at all the info that has come out over the last few short months there is an incredible amount of mounting evidence that the game is changing for the better.

I have said it before and will say it again - it may not be directly reflected in the Win/Loss column yet however if people take a step back and simply look at the context clues that are out there it is very easy to see that Tulane Athletics & Tulane Football is getting ready to take that leap where it should be. Having a winning season here and there without the support in place would result in exactly that - here and there. We are seeing many things getting put into place that should result in sustained success because we will have the support needed.
Smells like a Victory Sunday to me!
As a side note if you clicked the link for the chat on December 18 you will have noticed these interesting nuggets:

"6:22 Comment From JBR16 Re football infrastructure, you didn't mention the new majors, that were part of the playbook. Are they still part of the plan and what is their status? Then Tulane President Scott Cowen made these comments in his Tulane Talk on March 15, 2013
6:24 Rick Dickson: As we’ve stated, this has been a work in progress for a number of years. We understand that there will be 5-6 new majors available for all Tulane students. I think our current and prospective students – athletes and general students – will benefit from this."
http://tulane.edu/administration/president/tulane_talk/tt_031513.cfm
"Joining a new, more competitive conference comprised of well-respected universities from major metropolitan areas, coupled with the significant investments we have made in athletics facilities and academic programming for student-athletes, will ensure increased exposure and stability for all of our sports. It will also make Tulane even more attractive to the nation's most talented and academically qualified student-athletes."

6:17 Comment From G-Wave Is there a relative time frame for when the new Tennis/Track facility would be constructed?
6:19 Rick Dickson: If we are able to stay on target, the facility will open for the fall of 2014.
6:07 Comment From soccerfan Is the new Devlin fieldhouse expandable? Is there a scenario where it would be expanded?
6:09 Rick Dickson: Yes, now that the drop ceiling has been removed, we've gained additional space between existing seating and the ceiling for potential expansion as demand dictates.
6:09 Comment From Barry Fieldhouse looks great! What is phase 2?
6:11 Rick Dickson: At the conclusion of this year's basketball season, we will begin phase two which will be completed in time for 2013 volleyball season. This phase includes new windows, cleaning up outside, new scoreboard, new restrooms, new concessions, easier access for our fans to enter seating behind team benches, and new locker rooms. Bob and Kate Devlin have been instrumental in this.
