NEW ORLEANS – While Curtis Johnson was all smiles as his team wrapped up its annual Spring Game on Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium, the second-year head coach had an even bigger reason to beam as local standout Edward Williams signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Green Wave shortly before practice began.
A 6-3, 230-pound linebacker from nearby Warren Easton High School, Williams waited a while to make his college decision and ultimately chose Tulane over Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, Oregon State, TCU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, among other schools. “The first thing about him is that his family, especially his parents Rose and Edward, Sr., was marvelous,” Johnson said of Williams. “They really were magnificent through this whole process. They did the right thing. They got together and made a family decision. Edward was happy with it. Everybody was happy with the decision they made. He’s a big-time player. He’s probably one of the best linebackers in the (country), and I know he’s one of the best linebackers in Louisiana, but he is one of the top prospects in Louisiana as well.” A four-year letterman for coach Tony Hull and the Eagles, Williams is rated a three-star recruit by ESPN.com, Rivals.com and 247Sports.com while garnering two-star status by Scout.com. He received an 87 rating, ranked as the No. 41 inside linebacker and the No. 32 prospect in the state by 247Sports.com while earning an 87 Scout Grade, ranking as the No. 56 inside backer and listing as the No. 43 recruit in Louisiana by ESPN.com. In addition, Williams is rated as the No. 27 inside linebacker nationally and the No. 21 recruit in the state by Rivals.com while listing as the No. 64 middle linebacker by Scout.com and sitting No. 26 on the Times-Picayune’ s Nifty 50. Williams claimed first-team all-district honors in each of his final three prep seasons.  As a senior, he earned first-team all-state and all-metro recognition and was named District 10-4A Defensive Player of the Year after posting 91 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, six pass break-ups, five sacks and an interception which he returned for a touchdown. Williams made an immediate impact as a freshman when returning a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, and posted 115 tackles and 11 sacks as a junior. “He is one exciting young man,” Johnson added. “He’s an exciting player. If you pull him up on YouTube, he makes one-handed interceptions and he’s all over the field. He does everything. He’s just a magnificent player and he’ll help us a lot this year.” Williams is the second player from Warren Easton to sign with the Green Wave, joining prep teammate and offensive lineman Jason Stewart. His signing brings Tulane’s 2013 Freshman Class to 23 – including 19 from the Greater New Orleans area – and the overall recruiting class to 25. --www.TulaneGreenWave.com-
